Trekkers with mild symptoms were told they needed urgent evacuation, or were encouraged to claim they were ill so a helicopter ride back would be billed to insurance. Hospitals then allegedly issued inflated or unnecessary medical bills.<\/p>\n<p>The most common place for this was the Everest Base Camp route, where tired trekkers facing a long walk back were an easy target. Nepal&#8217;s authorities have discussed stricter reporting of rescue flights, and insurers now check claims far more closely.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how-a-genuine-rescue-works\"><\/span>How a genuine rescue works<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Someone is genuinely unwell or injured<\/strong>, and descending on foot isn&#8217;t safe or possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The guide or trekker contacts the insurer&#8217;s 24-hour assistance line<\/strong>, or a rescue operator who contacts the insurer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The insurer checks the case<\/strong>, often speaking to a doctor, and issues a guarantee of payment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The helicopter operator gets flight clearance<\/strong> and flies at the first safe weather window. Mountain flights only happen in daylight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The patient is flown to a suitable hospital<\/strong>, usually in Kathmandu, Pokhara or Nepalgunj depending on the region, and the insurer receives full flight and medical records.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In a real emergency, the insurer&#8217;s approval may come while the helicopter is already on its way. That is normal. It is insurance fraud, and insurers can refuse the claim and leave you with the bill.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-to-do-if-you-feel-unwell\"><\/span>What to do if you feel unwell<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Stop going higher.<\/strong> If symptoms are mild, rest where you are.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go down<\/strong> if symptoms don&#8217;t improve.
