Highlights of the Lukla to Namche Helicopter Flight

  • Ten minutes in the air instead of a five to six hour climb with a pack.
  • Flies the Dudh Koshi gorge past Ghat, Phakding and Monjo, with Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru ahead.
  • Lands at the Namche helipad on the upper edge of the bazaar, a few minutes’ walk from the lodges.
  • Syangboche airstrip, just above Namche, can be used instead when you are staying at the Hotel Everest View.
  • Useful when a trek day is lost to a late Lukla arrival, a strike, or simply tired legs.
  • Also flown for porters, cargo and medical transfers on the same sector.
  • USD 900 for the whole helicopter, from USD 300 for a single seat when the flight is shared.

Lukla to Namche Helicopter Flight Cost

  • Private charter: USD 900 per helicopter, up to 5 passengers. You pick the time inside the morning window.
  • Shared seat: from USD 300 per person, when a flight is already going that way with space.

The charter price is the same whether one person flies or five, so the cost per head drops sharply with a group: five passengers sharing one charter works out at USD 180 each.

Prices include the flight, the pilot and government service charges. Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fees are paid separately if you have not already bought them on the way in.

Why Fly Instead of Walking to Namche

The Lukla to Namche walk is the hardest half-day of the standard Everest trek: a long descent to the Dudh Koshi, the suspension bridges at Larja Dobhan, then a continuous climb of roughly 600 m into Namche. People fly this sector because:

  • A trekking day was lost. Lukla flights are delayed often enough that one helicopter leg can rescue a fixed itinerary.
  • Someone in the group cannot manage the climb - a knee, a chest infection, or simply the altitude arriving faster than expected.
  • Time is short. Flying up and walking down turns a 12 day trek into something that fits a shorter holiday.
  • Cargo and resupply. Lodges, expeditions and film crews move loads on this sector all season.

How the Flight Works

1. Lukla helipad, morning

You meet the helicopter beside the apron at Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Bags are weighed with passengers, and the pilot gives a short safety briefing.

2. Ten minutes up the Dudh Koshi (about 10 minutes)

The helicopter follows the gorge north past Ghat, Phakding and Monjo, over the Larja Dobhan bridges, then climbs the last 600 m to Namche.

3. Namche helipad (3,440 m)

You land at the Namche helipad, set above the bazaar on the upper right side of town where the trail continues towards Khumjung and Dole. The lodges are a short walk below, and porters can be arranged at the helipad in season.

If you are staying at the Hotel Everest View, we can land at Syangboche instead, which sits closer to the hotel.

Total: about 20 minutes from the Lukla apron to a lodge in Namche.

  • Helicopter flight from Lukla to the Syangboche helipad
  • Pilot and flight crew
  • Government service charges
  • Emergency oxygen on board
  • Passenger insurance
  • Window seat for every passenger
  • Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and municipality fee, if not already paid
  • Porters from the Syangboche helipad into Namche
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Extra costs caused by weather delays
  • Personal travel insurance

Acclimatisation: Read This Before You Fly Up

Flying gains 580 m of altitude in ten minutes. Walking the same sector takes five to six hours and your body uses that time. Namche at 3,440 m is high enough for altitude sickness, and arriving by air is the one way to reach it without any gradual gain at all.

What we recommend to anyone flying up:

  • Keep the Namche rest day. Two nights before going higher, which is the standard schedule anyway.
  • Walk the acclimatisation hike to the Everest View Hotel or Khumjung on your rest day, then sleep low in Namche.
  • Drink and eat properly on the first evening, and skip alcohol that night.
  • Know the symptoms: headache, nausea, poor sleep, breathlessness at rest. If they get worse rather than better, go down – and tell your guide early.

If a member of your group is already unwell at Lukla, flying higher is the wrong move. Tell us and we will arrange a flight out to Kathmandu instead.

Weight, Luggage and Weather

  • Payload: roughly 450 to 500 kg per flight including passengers and baggage, which is what sets the five passenger limit on this sector.
  • Luggage: trekking duffels and daypacks are fine. Tell us the total load when booking; cargo-only flights are priced the same as a charter.
  • Weather: the Dudh Koshi gorge fills with cloud from mid-morning, so this sector flies early. In the monsoon expect a window before 10:00 AM or none at all.
  • Cancelled flight: you move to the next available slot or take a refund, the same policy as on our other Khumbu sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions - Lukla to Namche Helicopter Flight

How much does the Lukla to Namche helicopter flight cost?

USD 900 for a private charter carrying up to five passengers, or from USD 300 per person for a shared seat when a flight is already running. Five people sharing a charter pay about USD 180 each.

How long is the flight from Lukla to Namche?

About 10 minutes in the air, roughly 30 minutes from the Lukla apron to a lodge in Namche once you add boarding and the walk down from Syangboche.

Where does the helicopter land in Namche?

At the Namche helipad, on the upper right side of Namche Bazaar where the trail heads towards Khumjung and Dole. It is a short walk down to the lodges. If you are staying at the Hotel Everest View we can land at Syangboche instead, which is closer to the hotel.

Is it safe to fly straight up to Namche without acclimatising?

The flight is safe; the altitude needs respect. You gain 580 m in ten minutes, so keep the standard Namche rest day, do the acclimatisation hike, and sleep in Namche for two nights before going higher. If anyone in the group already has altitude symptoms at Lukla, fly them down rather than up.

How many passengers and how much luggage can fly?

Up to five passengers, with a total payload of roughly 450 to 500 kg including baggage. Trekking duffels are fine. Tell us the weights at booking so the load can be planned.

Can I book this flight on the day?

Often yes, if an aircraft is already working the Khumbu that morning. Call or message us on WhatsApp from Lukla and we will tell you what is flying. In October, November, March and April it is better to book a day ahead.

What time of day does it fly?

Early morning. The Dudh Koshi gorge clouds over from mid-morning, so the window is usually before 10:00 AM and earlier still during the monsoon.

Can you carry cargo or an injured trekker?

Yes. Cargo-only flights on this sector are priced as a charter. For an injured or sick trekker, tell us the symptoms when you call - a medical case is normally flown to Kathmandu rather than up to Namche.

Do you fly the reverse direction?

Yes, the Namche to Lukla helicopter flight runs on the same aircraft and the same price band, and we also fly Namche straight to Kathmandu.
