Far-West Nepal · Lake
Nepal’s largest lake, in remote Rara National Park.
Route: Kathmandu→Nepalgunj→…→Kathmandu
The tour flies from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then north over the hills of Karnali to the lake, which is ringed by pine and juniper forest. Few travellers reach Rara because the journey by road and on foot takes many days.
At 2,990 m (9,810 ft), most visitors feel fine on a short visit. Walk slowly, drink water, and rest before walking uphill if you have just flown in from Kathmandu.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are April–June and September–November. In the June–August monsoon, early morning is usually the only clear window.
Rara Lake is at 2,990 m (9,810 ft) above sea level.

About 4 h tour via Nepalgunj. Flight times depend on the route, the weather and any refuelling stops.
The clearest flying months are April–June and September–November. Morning flights have the best chance of clear views, because cloud usually builds by midday.
Trips that include Rara Lake start from USD 8,500 per charter. Shared seats cost less for one or two travellers; a private charter is often better value for a group.
