In Hindu tradition the lake was created by Lord Shiva. By helicopter from Kathmandu, pilgrims and sightseers reach the lake in about half an hour, compared with two to three days on foot.
At 4,380 m (14,370 ft), the air is thin. Helicopter tours keep ground time short, and anyone who flies in directly from Kathmandu should move slowly and tell the crew about a headache or breathlessness.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are March–June and September–November. In the June–August monsoon, early morning is usually the only clear window.
