Samagaun is the largest village on the upper Manaslu Circuit, at 3,530 m below Mount Manaslu (8,163 m).
Samagaun is where Manaslu Circuit trekkers rest and acclimatise, with side trips to Birendra Tal, Pungyen Gompa and Manaslu Base Camp (about 4,800 m). Helicopters land here for scenic tours from Kathmandu, for trekkers flying out, and for rescues on the circuit. The village lies inside the Manaslu restricted area, so passengers who land need permits.
At 3,530 m (11,581 ft), the air is thin. Helicopter tours keep ground time short, and anyone who flies in directly from a low city should move slowly and tell the crew about a headache or breathlessness.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are March–May and September–November. Morning flights have the best chance of clear views, because cloud usually builds by midday.
