EnquireKanchenjunga's base camps are around three weeks' trek from the road. Helicopters reach Pangpema, or Oktang (about 4,730 m) on the south side, with a fuel stop at Suketar airport in Taplejung. The area is a restricted zone, so passengers who land need permits.
At 5,143 m (16,873 ft), there is only about half to 60 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. Ground time on helicopter tours is limited to a few minutes, and helicopters carry fewer passengers per flight at this height because thin air reduces lift.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are October–November and March–May. Morning flights have the best chance of clear views, because cloud usually builds by midday.
