Enquire Helicopter Rescue Service The walk to Makalu Base Camp from Tumlingtar takes around a week each way through Makalu Barun National Park. Helicopters reach it with a fuel stop at Tumlingtar in the Arun valley, for scenic tours and for rescues of trekkers and climbers.
At 4,870 m (15,978 ft), there is only about half to 60 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. Ground time on helicopter tours is limited to a few minutes, and helicopters carry fewer passengers per flight at this height because thin air reduces lift.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are October–November and March–May. Morning flights have the best chance of clear views, because cloud usually builds by midday.
