The short answer: helicopters can land at Everest Base Camp, and rescue and expedition supply flights do. Sightseeing tours, though, normally don’t land inside base camp. They fly over it and land nearby, at Kala Patthar (5,545 m) when the rules and weather allow, or stop for breakfast at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m).
It’s one of the questions we’re asked most, and the honest answer has changed a few times in the last three years. Here is how it works now.

Why tours don’t land inside base camp
- It’s a working expedition camp. In the climbing season, Everest Base Camp is a village of tents on the moving Khumbu Glacier. Landing space is kept for expedition logistics and rescues.
- You can’t actually see the summit from there. Base camp sits so close under Everest that the summit is hidden behind the mountain’s own shoulder and Nuptse. The classic view of Everest is from above, at Kala Patthar.
- Thin air. At 5,364 metres a helicopter can carry very little, so every landing up there has to earn its place.

What changed after 2023
In July 2023 a helicopter crashed at Lamjura in Solukhumbu, killing all six people on board. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) tightened its rules soon afterwards, adding daily supervision of helicopter operations, central approval of flights including rescues, and limits on non-essential flights during that monsoon. In practice, shared sightseeing groups stopped landing at Kala Patthar, while private charters could still arrange a landing.
In January 2025, local bodies in the Khumbu announced a ban on commercial helicopter flights in the area. CAAN disputed their authority to do so, and flights were partly allowed again from 10 February 2025 under new conditions. In 2026, operators began offering Kala Patthar landings on shared tours again, using a shuttle that carries two passengers at a time from Pheriche. Rules in the Everest region change, so we always confirm exactly what is possible for your date before you pay.

Why only two passengers at a time?
At 5,545 metres the air holds about half the oxygen of sea level, and a helicopter’s rotor makes far less lift. That usually limits a landing to two passengers plus the pilot. We explain it in more detail in Helicopter Weight Limits in Nepal.
How long do you stay?
Only a few minutes. That’s partly about the helicopter and partly about you: flying from Kathmandu to that height in an hour means your body hasn’t adjusted. Our guide to altitude sickness on a helicopter tour explains what to expect.
