Everest Helicopter Tour vs Everest Mountain Flight: Which Should You Choose?

Everest Helicopter Cost

Nepal Helicopter Service | Kathmandu, Nepal

If you want to see Everest without trekking, you have two main choices: an airline’s mountain flight from Kathmandu, or a helicopter tour into the Everest region. They are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are very different experiences, at very different prices.

The mountain flight

Airlines in Kathmandu run early-morning flights that head east along the Himalaya, pass close to Everest and return, usually in about an hour. Airlines typically guarantee each passenger a window seat, and on a clear morning you see a long line of peaks, including Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu. It is a great choice if your budget is limited or you only have a morning free in Kathmandu.

What you don’t get is time on the ground, or the feeling of being among the mountains rather than beside them.

The helicopter tour

A helicopter tour flies into the Everest region itself. You pass over Lukla and Namche Bazaar, follow the valley towards Everest, see base camp and the Khumbu Glacier, and land. On our shared tour that means breakfast at Hotel Everest View with Everest and Ama Dablam in front of you. On Kala Patthar options you stand at 5,545 metres facing the summit.

It costs much more and takes longer, but for many people it is the highlight of their whole trip. See our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour for current options.

Which one suits you?

Choose the mountain flight if you:

  • Are travelling on a tight budget
  • Only have a few hours free in Kathmandu
  • Want to see the whole range rather than one valley
  • Would rather not fly to high altitude

Choose the helicopter tour if you:

  • Want to land and stand in front of Everest
  • Are celebrating something special
  • Want to photograph the mountains up close
  • Can’t trek but want the feeling of being in the Khumbu

Can you do both?

Some visitors do the mountain flight on arrival and, if they love it, book a helicopter tour for a later morning. If you do, keep them on separate days, and leave room in your plans for weather on both.
