That is a lot of money for a morning. So what are you paying for?
What you get for the price
- Time. The Everest Base Camp trek takes around 12 to 14 days. The helicopter tour takes about five hours.
- Access. You stand in front of Everest without needing the fitness, knees or holiday days for a long trek.
- A landing. Unlike a mountain flight by plane, you get out, breathe the air and take your photos on the ground.
- A view of the whole valley. You see Lukla, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and the Khumbu Glacier in one sweep, something trekkers only piece together over days.
The alternatives, honestly
Trekking
If you have two weeks, reasonable fitness and enjoy walking, the trek to Everest Base Camp is one of the great journeys in the world, and much cheaper. You will see the mountains for days rather than minutes, meet Sherpa families and sleep in villages the helicopter flies over. For many people it is the better experience.
A mountain flight by plane
Airlines in Kathmandu run early-morning sightseeing flights along the Himalaya that pass close to Everest. They cost a fraction of a helicopter tour and take about an hour. You don’t land, and you share the plane with many others, but you do see the peaks. If your budget is tight, this is a good choice.
Viewpoints near Kathmandu and Pokhara
On clear mornings Nagarkot, near Kathmandu, and Sarangkot, above Pokhara, give sweeping Himalayan views for the price of a taxi. You won’t see Everest up close, but you’ll see big mountains.
When a helicopter tour is worth it
- You have only a few days in Nepal and Everest is the reason you came.
- You, or someone in your family, can’t trek because of age, health or injury.
- You want to photograph the mountains from angles you can’t reach on foot.
- It is a special occasion, like a proposal, anniversary or milestone birthday.
- You have trekked before and want to see the Khumbu again without repeating the walk.
When it probably isn’t
- You are travelling on a tight budget and the price would squeeze the rest of your trip.
- You love hiking and have the time. The trek will give you far more.
- You can only fly in July or August. Monsoon cloud makes delays and cancellations much more likely.
- You are expecting hours at the top. High landings are short by necessity.
How to get better value
- Share seats. Solo travellers and couples pay far less on a shared flight than a private charter.
- Think about Annapurna. The Annapurna Base Camp tour from Pokhara is a real high-mountain landing for a fraction of the Everest price.
- Fly in the right season. October, November, March and April give the best chance of a clear flight on your planned day.
- Keep a spare day. A flight moved for weather is disappointing; a flight missed because you had no buffer is expensive.
- Read what’s included. Check whether your price includes a landing or just a fly-past, breakfast, hotel transfers and passenger insurance.
