Pilgrimage Tour The lakes are several days’ walk from the nearest road, so a helicopter is the only practical way to visit in a day. Pilgrims often combine Damodar Kunda with Muktinath.
At 4,890 m (16,043 ft), there is only about half to 60 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. Ground time on helicopter tours is limited to a few minutes, and helicopters carry fewer passengers per flight at this height because thin air reduces lift.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are April–October. This area lies in the rain shadow north of the Himalaya, so flights often run through the June–August monsoon too.
