EnquireAfter reaching Everest Base Camp or the Kala Patthar viewpoint, many trekkers skip the three-to-four-day walk back and fly from Gorakshep to Lukla or straight to Kathmandu. Because of the altitude, helicopters take fewer passengers per trip from here than from lower helipads.
At 5,164 m (16,942 ft), there is only about half to 60 percent of the oxygen available at sea level. Ground time on helicopter tours is limited to a few minutes, and helicopters carry fewer passengers per flight at this height because thin air reduces lift.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are March–May and September–December. In the June–August monsoon, early morning is usually the only clear window.
