Everest Heli Pickup Tenzing-Hillary Airport sits on a hillside at 2,860 m. Helicopters land on pads beside the runway, drop trekkers and supplies, and refuel before flying higher up the Khumbu Valley. Many trekkers fly Kathmandu to Lukla by helicopter at the start of the Everest Base Camp trek, or fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end.
At 2,860 m (9,383 ft), most visitors feel fine on a short visit. Walk slowly, drink water, and rest before walking uphill if you have just flown in from Kathmandu.
Helicopters fly all year when the weather allows. The clearest months are March–May and September–December. In the June–August monsoon, early morning is usually the only clear window.
